Homemade Ice Cream, Using a Vintage Freezer of Course

This post will be a little different from the normal type of posts that I do.

  I had a few request for our homemade ice cream recipe after I posted a pic on our Facebook page. 

 So here goes...

~Strawberry & Peanut Butter Cup~

We have been making homemade ice cream for as long as I can remember.  Warm summer evenings just call for ice cream, and there is nothing better than homemade.

Basic Vanilla

6 qt. freezer

20 lbs. crushed ice

1 box rock salt

3 qts Half & Half

2 1/2 cups sugar

1 Tbsp. vanilla

1 tsp. salt

SOAK WOOD BUCKET FOR A LEAST AN HOUR BEFORE FREEZING, 

OVERNIGHT IS BEST

(this will make the wood expand so it does not leak the ice water)

Whisk together 1 qt. Half & Half with sugar, vanilla and salt.  Pour into canister. (make sure the dasher is in place.)  Add the rest of the Half & Half till the canister is about 3/4 full.  Place canister into wood bucket.  Fill halfway with ice, pour a layer of salt. (be generous) add more ice till it is full and it covers the lid.  Pour on more salt.  

Crank, crank, crank. 

 It is a good time for the boys to show off thier muscles, by seeing how many times they can crank the handle. 

(For an electric, just plug it in and let it turn for about 20 minutes.)

The ice will slowly melt so you need to add more as needed. (the rock salt melts the ice to make ice water.  Ice water is colder than ice, causing the cream to freeze.)

Keep cranking till it will not budge any more.  Carefully remove the top layer of ice. (save)  Take of the lid being careful not to drip any salty water into the ice cream.  Remove the dasher, scraping it off carefully. (or lick it off) :) 

 Place a layer of wax paper over the top of the canister and put the lid back on.  Cover again with the ice you saved and more, completely covering the lid. Cover with a towel.  

Let ripen. (sit for a while to harden more)

Eat. 

Then eat some more. You can't ever stop with one serving. ;)

This is a basic recipe that can be altered.

 *If you want to do a fruit flaver, 

puree enough peaches or strawberries or blackberries and 2 -3 cups of sugar, salt and vanilla and pour into canister till half full.  Fill the rest of the way with Half & Half. (up to the 3/4 mark on the can)

*If you want to do a vanilla base with candy,

follow the vanilla recipe and add 8-10 bars of crushed candy, or a package of Oreos that have been cut in half.

*If you want a chocolate base,

follow the vanilla recipe and add a bottle of chocolate syrup and decrease the sugar amount.  I have also used a box of chocolate pudding.

Here is what we enjoyed on July 4th this year after a picnic supper at the park.

~Peach, 50/50, Vanilla, Strawberry, Lemon Gelato, Oreo~

We like to use the White Mountain brand of ice cream freezer.  We have both a

 vintage hand crank

and 

and electric freezer.

We like both, but for some reason, the vintage hand crank freezer, freezes a little better. 

 Long vintage enamel spoons are great for serving.

*Yes, there are those times when decide spur-of-the-moment that we want to make ice cream and we don't have time to soak the bucket or to let it ripen.  It stills taste wonderful.  It just might take a little longer for it to get too hard to crank any more, and it might be a little softer. 

 But homemade is always the best!*

I hope this helps those of you who requested the recipe.  And of course I always have to add a little bit about using vintage.  I love vintage!  It seems to be made to last!

Using Vintage for a Summer Party

My house is full of vintage and antique treasures.

  I love the character, patina, history and sturdiness that they offer.

I use it too. At parties, gatherings, BBQ's etc.

(The color on these first photos is not my favorite, but you will get the idea.)

Last month when my son was graduating from 8th grade we had a little party after the ceremony at our house. Lemonade and homemade icecream sandwiches.

A big square vintage jar full of lemonade ready to go into Ball jars sitting on an enamel tray.

An old wood drawer full of chocolate chip cookies made into icecream sandwiches wrapped in wax paper and tied with red & white French twine.

Large Ball Jars worked perfect as vase for three simple bouquets.

The graduate.  

We draped an antique French tea towel over the counter to make it look a little more festive.

So there you go.  A few ideas of how to use vintage in a simple little Summer Party.

BTW- The lemonade and icecream sandwiches were delicious!

A few more vintage Summer ideas....

Set out a picnic on a sawhorse table, use a vintage table cloth, a basket to hold box lunches and a vintage ice bucket.

For a fiesta use white ironstone bowls full of chips, salsa and quacamole.

How about a simple company breakfast with a resturant ware mug of coffee, and an ironstone plate of mini muffins and fresh picked blackberries.

A vintage egg basket is just the thing to hold fresh veggies for a salad that you will be making for a summer BBQ.

My parents own an apple orchard, so "Apple" parties are something we look forward to every year.  Here is a primitive farmtable, antique French towel, and basket to hold the apples.

An ironstone bowl holds the cinnimon/sugar mix and the green pottery bowl is just the right size to hold enough apples for a pie.

This stack of ironstone plates are ready to be filled as people go through the buffet line at a summer picnic. The vintage pitchers work great for sauces.

How about a morning tea party in the garden using a vintage tea set.  

A vintage round mirror was used as a tray.

Keep your baked goods away from critters in a pie safe.

And after you have fed your guest, don't forget to have something for them to lounge and relax on, such as this cute folding bed draped with lace and a few ticking pillows.

TVB at Remnants of th Past Spring 2013 ~ 2

This is my Part 2 post about 

Remnants of the Past - Spring 2013. 

 Last post I shared all the garden items we had for sale.  Now I will share everything else.

We had lots of industrial items including two set of these wood drawer cubbies. 

 Both sold.

Lots of vintage books found new homes. 

 Don't they look pretty next to the salvage architectural?

This 1953 Postal sorting cubby was a main focal point.  We stuffed it full of little white pitchers, sea shells, jars with white buttons, butter pats, etc.

This vintage cupboard was a great place to display ironstone, vintage phots, linens, pillows and primitive wood utinsels.

A collection of wood spools stood together on a large farm table.

A couple of girls stood gracefully in the corner.

A large ironstone pitcher with fresh peonies, mustard jar, ivy wreath, and side table, in front of a vintage black screen door.

This collection of pretty vintage quilts added a nice pop of color.

A large primitive pine cupboard full of apothecary jars, ironstone, crystal, vintage jars with zinc lids.

This basket was a great place to hold a couple of pillows, primitive wood paddles and rolling pins.

Oh yes.  We can't forget the pie.  It sat in the antique pie safe looking pretty and smelling so nice.  It made for a tasty afternoon snack.

So, as you can see, we had a large varity of things.  Industrial, garden, primitve, shabby...

It all goes together nicely, when it is usful to a person.  A little mix is good.  That is what makes a cozy and homey home.  Things that you love and that you can use.

If you follow this Blog, if you "Like" us on Facebook, if you shop at our store, or visit us at shows, then you probably know that twice a year we do a large show in San Luis Obispo.

Remnants of the Past.

The first weekend in June this is what we were up to.

We had lots of beautiful garden items.  

Watering cans, plant stand, iron planters.

This little child's green wicker rocker is one of my favorites.

Bird houses, green metal headboard and step stool.

The cherub fountain was actually running.  I love the sound of water.  Cement urns, garden gate and the Trader Joes shopping bag, please ignore.

Beautiful cement goose.

This sweet little cherub bird bath didn't last long.

Vintage rusty stroller holds an old fruit box. 

 This makes for a great display in the garden.

Georgeous wicker chaise lounge, loaded with beautiful French script pillows, French wash stand turned into a plant stand, clay pots, iron topiary.

The little white iron crib made into a settee draped with pillows and lace went to a happy customer for her covered porch.  How fun is that?

Remnants of the Past is up next for TVB

Getting ready for Remnants of the Past takes a lot of work.

We have been shopping, cleaning, pricing, packing, painting, sewing, recreating, stamping bags, making price tags, loading the trailer, posting info on Facebook, handing out brochures, chalking out our space, etc.

I am glad to get back areas in my house where I have been saving and hoarding things for this show.  We save special treasures months in advance especially for ROTP.

One week from today we will be setting up our space.  I am anxious to display all the beautiful treasures and to "use" all of the ideas floating around in my head for merchandising them.

In the mean time, the store will be OPEN for those of you who can't make it to the show, for your gift needs, decorating needs, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® needs, furniture needs or for some great inspiration.
